Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is a vast wild reserve in southern Tanzania, incorporating a variety of landscapes and a diverse safari offering. It’s a lesser-known destination and, therefore, is less crowded than the popular northern parks in Tanzania, which gives it a wilder and more private atmosphere.

Selous is home to a third of Tanzania's elephant and two thirds of the Hunting Dog population. The population of Dogs peaks in September and October and packs of upto 56 Dogs have been spotted in the Reserve. The Rufiji River is home to plenty of hippo and croc, and the Reserve is home to large numbers of buffalo, elephant, fantastic prides of lion as well as a great many antelope species. The sandbanks, oxbow lakes, islands and channels are home to over 440 species of birds, including 2 rare species, the Pel's Fishing Owl and the White-Backed Heron, which habituate the wooded sections of the riverbank.

Selous is not only a delightful place for the seasoned safari enthusiast, it also offers an amazing introduction to unspoilt Africa. Home to some of Africa's best walking, boat safaris and fly camping trips, the Selous has the greatest diversity of safari activities of all the Tanzanian safari parks. The boating safaris in particular really set this reserve apart from other Tanzanian parks. The fact that the Selous is so much quieter (in visitor terms) than the majority of the rest of the country just adds to its charm!
